Abscesses and cysts may require incision & drainage (I&D). The goal is to prep a sterile field, support the provider efficiently, and ensure proper wound care and patient safety.

• Stainless Steel Tray
• Lidocaine (local anesthetic)
• Scalpel
• Non-sterile gauze
• Tweezers / forceps
• Packing material (brown container)
• Scissors
• Gloves
• Biohazard disposal supplies

• Prep before provider enters—these procedures should start immediately
• Expect fluid/pus → protect area and have extra gauze ready
• Patient may be anxious—set expectations calmly
• Stay organized—provider should not have to ask for tools
• Be ready for packing (not all cases, but common)

📘 Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Identify Abscess / Cyst Visit

• Review schedule in Besa EHR
• Common complaints:
  • Painful lump
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • “Boil” / “infected cyst”

2. Prepare Supplies

Set up:

• Lidocaine
• Scalpel
• Gauze (multiple pieces)
• Tweezers / forceps
• Packing material
• Scissors

Ensure everything is opened or easily accessible

3. Set Up Procedure Tray

• Place all supplies on stainless steel tray
• Add sticky note with patient’s first name
• Keep layout clean and organized for quick access

4. If Needed - Assist During Procedure (I&D)

• Hand provider:
  • Lidocaine for numbing
  • Scalpel for incision
• Be ready with gauze immediately for drainage
• Assist with:
  • Blotting drainage
  • Passing tweezers/forceps
• Maintain clear field for provider at all times

5. If Needed - Packing & Dressing

• If packing is required:
  • Hand packing material + scissors
  • Assist with placement as directed
• Apply gauze dressing to site

6. If Needed - Post-Procedure Care

• Ensure bleeding is controlled
• Clean surrounding area
• Confirm patient is stable and comfortable

7. Specimen Handling (If Applicable)

• If culture is taken:
  • Follow the Specimen Handling & Lab Coordinator article. 
  • Label correctly
  • Package per protocol
  • Follow lab coordination process

8. Room Turnover

• Dispose of all biohazard waste properly
• Clean and disinfect all surfaces
• Reset room for next patient
